Efficient production of alternative proteins
Flottweg separation technology for processing fermented proteins
As sustainable and healthy diets become ever more important, alternative sources of protein are increasingly coming into focus. Novel food innovations such as cultivated meat or biologically modified fungal mycelium offer promising approaches to the sustainable revolution in food consumption.
These new sources of protein not only open a wide range of nutritional alternatives, but also significantly reduce the environmental impact of traditional food production. Thus, fermented proteins will play a crucial role in feeding the growing world population while requiring fewer resources to produce, since they do not require cultivated land or specific climatic conditions. The focus of this burgeoning field is to develop efficient and sustainable production processes to ensure consistently high product quality.
Flottweg supports producers of alternative proteins with state-of-the-art separation technology in downstream processing that enables the successful scaling of biotechnical processes – from research to industrial production. With our Sedicanter®, the biomass is optimally dewatered to maintain cell integrity throughout the production process ensuring maximum product yield.
Our machines for the industrial production of alternative protein sources
How does industrial protein production work?
After the fermentation process, the biomass obtained must be separated from the fermentation medium. This requires a mechanical dewatering process to reduce the water content of the biomass as much as possible to optimize downstream processing. Depending on the process parameters, the medium can be separated either in batches or continuously via a centrifuge. The aim is to achieve maximum dewatering of the biomass and thus a high yield.
The Flottweg Sedicanter® utilizes density differences and a unique design to separate the biomass from the liquid phase via centrifugal force, resulting in optimal dewatering.
Depending on the process, the biomass is subjected to a further washing step in order to increase the yield and purity.
